Rapid deforestation and urbanization has led to the depletion of forest area. This has led to number of animal species to become extinct. In order to preserve the wildlife and endangered species, certain areas are demarked as reserved area for national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. There are at present 441 national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Some of the important ones are the Gir national park, Jim Corbett national park, Kazhiranga Wildlife sanctuary and Periyar national park (http://www.keralaholidays.com/Destinations/Thekkady_-_Periyar.htm).
Kerala in South India is state that is covered largely by dense forests and steep valleys. This state is bound by Western Ghats on the Eastern side and the Arabian Sea on the West. Nestled in between this is the picturesque land of Kerala. Because of the dense forest cover, there are many wildlife sanctuaries and national park. The Silent valley national park, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and Periyar Wildlife sanctuary are famous.
The Periyar Wildlife sanctuary is located in Thekkady in Idukki district. This district is itself located in the Southern part of the State. This sanctuary is a preserved area, especially for the tiger. Periyar is one of the 27 tiger reserves in India. The sanctuary is spread across 777 sq kms and about 360 sq kms of area is ideal for viewing elephants in their natural environment. This sanctuary comprises of dense evergreen forests. It is situated at 2800ft above sea level. It is an idyllic place that gives ample opportunities for encounters with the wilderness. It is refreshingly cool with the air filled the aroma of spices. In the sanctuary is located the artificial Periyar lake formed by the Mullaiperiyar dam across the Periyar river. A boat cruise on the lake is the best way to watch the wildlife. This national park is home to the Indian tiger, elephants and other mammals like the monkeys, squirrels and bisons. Many rare species of birds can also be found here. A visit to this sanctuary can be refreshing and enchanting.
