I spent a year in NZ, and anyone who hasn't been needs to get a campervan and drive round it (mainly the south island), you will see some of the most stunning scenary ever.

Welcome ED!

This is pretty much we did while in NZ. Except we bought a banged up old Mazda, which it was still possible to sleep in, even if it was a tad uncomfortable. We'd go to a hostel once a week or so to freshen up and take a few days off the road. We turned our boot into a food store/kitchen, set up our CD player to work with the car's radio, and then hit the road.

What makes it such a great way to travel is, you can stop whenever you see something interesting to look at. You're not in any rush, you can do as little or as much travelling as you like. Once or twice we saw a 'New Zealand Experience' bus go past crammed with backpakers, we didn't envy them in the slightest. I'm sure those busses are great for the social aspect, but I can't imagine it's great if you're the kind of person who likes to explore.
